From the Editor
Writing is a solitary and often frustrating business. What can a writer do
to keep motivated when they get a string of rejections? How can they keep from
giving in to doubt about whether their writing is good enough, or whether their
stories are important? Bylines Writer's Desk Calendar was created four years
ago to retaliate against those negative emotions - and to help writers affirm
and celebrate their writing.
The calendar is mostly a labor of love. I, too, am a writer, and need to read
success stories and positive words frequently to keep my batteries charged.
Bylines showcases writers and shares the reasons they write, explains through
stories the rewards of writing, and shows how the power of words can change
lives and help others. It is a place for writers to share their personal stories,
both triumphs and failures, with other aspiring and established writers.
When I read one of the narratives each week, I find it easy to empathize with
the frustration over rejection, the thrill of acceptance, and the trials of
writing with children underfoot. I cheer over the serendipities helping a writer
forward, and gnash my teeth over the setbacks. It inspires me to work harder,
to "try on" a new idea, or to submit to a fresh market.
I hope it inspires and motivates you, too!
